It's Amusing How People Think

Had an amusing experience yesterday. I went out looking for a last minute Christmas gift for my wife. It's a tacky novelty that I suspect costs about .40 for the store and I imagine would have cost me about $8. When I went into Canadian Tire the two women there were amused I was looking for this item so late in the season. They told me that they do carry the item every year but are out of it by mid November. Their whole attitude was amusement at my not knowing this. Walking out I was equally as amused by how people that are supposed to be in business just don't get it. I'm the customer. I left without giving you my money. Someone did something dumb here but it wasn't me. You say yourself you run out of this product which I guarantee is a high mark up item, every year very early and don't meet the demand. Order more. Find another source. Charge more. It's incredible that people don't understand the fundamentals of how business works.

  1. OMG... you are one of those customers... glad you weren't in my line... here's my take.. it's Christmas.. it comes the same time EVERY YEAR... prepare yourself and don't expect us to have your "last minute" items... they are someone else's last minute items too... yeesh. And for the record, we do order more... and you know what happens?? You unorganized last minuters buy more... Thanks for being one of those people that make customer service at Christmas time such a delight....lol

  2. Seriously??? It is Dec24th - it's not like they are making them in the back of the store!!!

I get this one all the time at work - as if I have a crystal ball to know how many books I should print. The only thing I know for sure is that the amount I bring in is always wrong - I am either too low in which case the retailer yells at me or we bring in too much in which case my company yells at me.

Are you telling me that Honda is sitting on inventory just in case??

  3. Automotive companies target 30 to 60 days of inventory between the customer and the factory. There are times at start up of a new model where a car company may not be able to fill demand but during the normal production cycle if inventory falls below 30 days typically the factory would run overtime to ensure there is adequate supply available.
I think the difference here is that the store tells me they run out of this same item every year six weeks before Christmas. If you are the publisher of a specific travel guide, dictionary, version of the bible etc. that sells out consistently every year is the crystal ball comment really fair?
Perhaps I didn't properly get my point across in my post but I don't have any problem at all with the fact that the store is out of the product. It's the part where everything else aside and the customer went out the door without being able to give the store his money and the store feels it's the customer's fault.
